Large, Rare & Important Chinese Pear Shaped Porcelain Vase 11-1/2" (29 Cm) Tall:

Our beautiful and extraordinary Chinese vase is of a highly sought scarce traditional form. It is (as not unusual) unsigned but from the Qing Dynasty. The form has a formal name in Chinese which is the yuhuchun ping form. A somewhat similarly shaped one in blue and white porcelain was offered in an listing for $150,000 for which an offer was accepted on March 28, 2013. In the information given in that listing, they cited Bloomberg as having reported that similar vase sold for $25 million dollars. We, as inexpert collectors of Chinese artifacts for many decades, never researched our vase nor are we representing ourselves as experts, but when we purchased this vase we thought it was something special and it was purchased at an estate sale where no information was offered.

Please thoroughly examine our photographs and use your own expertise and judgment in assessing it both for beauty and rarity as well as value consideration. Look at the photograph inside the vase for the unusual porcelain performance on its interior bottom. The birds, flowers, mountains and other decorations are lovely. The uppermost outer rim’s decor is unusual as is the shoulder band and decoration thereof. The deer heads with antlers as handles are remarkable in their simplicity and their tenor resounds in the lovely splayed foot. The condition overall is remarkably good. Please respect your own insight by close inspection of the vase. There are reflections on the vase, as is usual in photography of surfaces such as this. Please do not misunderstand and think they are abrasions of any kind.

In an article in the Wall Street Journal on April 10, 2013, a pear-shaped vase was shown in regard to Christie’s opening a standalone sale house in China and referencing the vase as representing a Chinese cultural relic from prior to 1911 (the end of the Qing Dynasty) as typical of those Christie’s will not be allowed to sell through their sale house. They are classical items that have traditionally been the most valuable collectibles among Chinese buyers.

We anticipate finding an important museum placement for fine collectors holdings for this wonderful piece we are parting with for our retirement.

Size is approximately 11-1/2” tall by 9” in diameter (29.2 cm by 22.9 cm). The top is 4-5/8” (11.75 cm) in diameter.

As many of you know, we are selling our collections in preparation for our retirement where we will have much smaller quarters than we have filled over the years. We thank you for your patronage and kind words though we are somewhat embarrassed to bare our endless possessions in front of the world. Please click here to view the collections we are selling.
