Large St Ives Bernard Leach Studio Pottery Bowl Z Sparrow On A Branch C 1949 Fab For Sale
Height : 11.5 cms / 4 ½”
Width : 23 cms / 9
inches
This large, stoneware bowl has a speckled, oatmeal, ash
glaze, with a cobalt blue band around the outside, decorated with three lustrous,
iron brown ‘Z’-shaped, brush-work designs, also known as ‘Sparrow on a Branch’,
(an example of which is in the Tate collection).
The brushwork is free and expressive, and each of the
patterns around this bowl has a life of its’ own, all three being subtly
different. Although classed as ‘standard ware’, some of these bowls were
decorated by Leach himself, and this large, confidently potted example has that
‘feel’ about it.
It has a generous, well turned foot, and the throwing
technique is demonstrated as a spiral in the interior.
Thought to have been made circa 1945-1950. (A similar,
smaller example (1949), appears on page 208, (no. 367), of the Oliver Watson Studio Pottery
book, published in association with the Victoria & Albert Museum. Please see photos).
Marked with an impressed ‘circular’ St Ives seal, and
‘England’.
Offered in excellent condition, with no chips, hairlines,
cracks or restoration.
A really superb and functional example of pottery from the
most important English studio, which would display well with any collection of ceramics
by Bernard Leach, Shoji Hamada, Michael Cardew, Katherine Pleydell-Bouverie,
William Marshall, Norah Braden or Richard Batterham .
Item weight 1.5 kg. (Before packing).
