Late 19th C Antique Brussels Point De Gaze Fan, Cherubs, Ventaglio Eventail Gild:
This is a large and glorious fan from the end of the 19th century, when Brussels needlelace was loved and worn by many, and in so many different ways! Adorning dresses, parasols, veils, and of course fans.
This wonderful pink MOP monture is gilded on both guards and in the gorge. It shines so beautifully that I found it difficult to photograph!
The gauze leaf has a central, unsigned painting of a maiden in the clouds frolicking with 6 chubby cherubs, swathed in floaty cream fabric to spare everyone's blushes! The Point de Gaze of a fine quality, and clean, borders the gauze panel. Diamante conceals the rivet.
I have noted 5 tiny holes in the gauze but it is otherwise sound, not weak on the folds as is often the case. There is one discolouration due to glue on the stick, just left of the maiden's foot. There are some small foxing marks on the leaf but you have to look for them and hold it in different ways to the light. To me, they are not an issue. Hopefully you can decide for yourself from the images.Guard length approx 14 inches or 36 cm, a largeHappy to answer questions.
