Late 19thc Antique Persian Farahan Sarouk. Natural Dyes Serapi Center Medallion:
Late 19th Century Antique FARAHAN SAROUK Rug with a SERAPI-inspired central medallion, West Persia, Arak Province, Plains of Farahan, Circa 1890-1900, and coming in very good overall original condition for the collector, designer, and decorator. The size is approximately 4'-5" x 6'-8" (135 x203cm). Lies flat on the floor, but not quite perfectly rectilinear. What we are looking at here is an early prototype Farahan Sarouk village rug from the latter part of the 19th century. Most were made on a cream or dark blue ground color. They were closely woven with the pile clipped short to make the design crisp to the eye. In the earliest pieces, like the present example, the designs were whimsically executed by the village women because they had not yet mastered the art of weaving from paper-scale designs. After about 1910, the execution improved considerably. An unusual aspect of this particular specimen is the Serapi-inspired central medallion and the spaciously drawn corner spandrals. Stunningly beautiful natural-dyed wool pile on a cotton foundation. Allover even pile condition with a few white knot heads here and there and only a couple minor pile areas with some exposed warps. Both side cords have been re-wrapped in the past. The top and bottom endings are both just slightly reduced by a couple rows of knots and have been secure in the past. This lovely antique carpet has just been professionally cleaned to museum standards and is now collection ready. This one magically changes its visual vibration to the eye as it has both a day time and a night time personality, both quite captivating to the viewer. It can be immediately be displayed as an antique textile artwall hanging in the home or office, or it can be placed down as a decorative floor covering with a high quality rug padding placed underneath for protection. Just a beautiful antique Persian furnishingrug for the collector or decorator.
