These fun petticoats were produced in large amounts in the late Victorian and Edwardian years to cater for the vast amount of newly daring ladies who liked the gents to see a glimpse of fun fabrics underneath their modest outer clothing!
As such, they are very early mass produced antique clothing.
I have sold quite a number of them, but particularly like this one, because of it's very wide skirt at the back, leading to ahuge flounce around the bottom.
The fact that it is not quite full length suggests that it is Edwardian rather than Victorian but I can't be certain. Skirts were beginning to rise a little in the early 1900's.
The petticoat has a set waistband, measuring approx 30". A single large hook and eye fastens it and this is a bit rusted, but still working well.
I have found a few pale marks [slightly yellow] which I'm sure will come out in the wash.
There are also a very few little areas of wear and little holes which are hiddenby the stripes, and I can see that some of the lower seams have been sewn back up durin g it's history.
Very wearable as a petti or skirt, I find it very attractive. Never meant to be an exclusive garment!
