You are offerding on an original wood engraving by Leo J. Meissner, NA (1895-1977). Meissner was one of the world\'s leading artists in the exacting medium of wood engraving, a technique where the mirror image of the subject is engraved into an end-grain block of wood -- not to be confused with block printing.

Meissner summered on Monhegan Island for decades, with Cape Elizabeth, Maine serving as his permanent address later in life.

The printdepicts a lively fish shack scene at Monhegan\'s Fish Beach featuring vintage Monhegan characters frozen in time on a summer\'s day.

From the style, my guess is that the print pre-dates the 1960s although whether it\'s from the 40s I can\'t say for sure.

The print was last framed in the 1960s as evidenced by Meissner\'s bio sticker on the back of the piece that dates from that era. I removed the aged frame toshow the condition of the print.

The print is signed by Meissner in pencil at the lower right. It also has a monogram carved in the block on the lower left. The print is number 45 out of an edition of 60.

The print or wood block image measures11\" x8.5\" . The light cream paper measures approximately15\" x12.5\".

The print is in very good, clean condition. The paper has been properly hinged to the bottom mat. There are no rips or tears. There is very slight toning that can be easily matted out. There is a slight ripple to the middle of the top middle of the print and a few handling marks on the left margin. All in all it\'sa very good, clean impression for a print that\'s 50-60 years old.

The top matting has yellowed with age and matting should be replaced. The back of the mat has oldtape residue. Photos were taken in natural, diffused light.
