Primary Wood filler (very fine powder)
- Used to make grain filler to fill wood grain and pores prior to french polishing, oiling or waxing.
- Mix with Earth pigments to get an exact colour match
- As supplied to Antique restorers for furniture restoration and repair work
Mix the Primary wood filler powder with natural Earth Pigments and Meths (or varnish) mix into a paste a little thicker than toothpaste, adding more earth pigments until the right colour is achieved. Mix the colour to a darker shade than required, because it will dry to a lighter shade. To apply grain filler, use a folded slightly damp, lint free cotton rag, and dip this into the mixture, apply firstly in the direction of the grain and then in a circular movement going across the grain, this will fill the pores, then wipe away any excess with a clean damp rag before it dries. The filler normally dries quite quickly, but ideally leave it for 48 hours to dry. I would recommend to only mix up a very small quantity at one time as required.
The powder, if kept dry and in a sealed bag has a shelf life of about 2 years. We sell a wide range of natural Earth Pigments in our Shop.
Colour matching: It is impossible for anyone to advise exactly which earth pigments and the percentages needed to match the colour you require. (Sorry, please do not send me photographs or website links) as a guide: Brown Umber, Yellow & Red Ochres, Burnt Sienna and Vegetable Black are the basic, most common pigments used by the trade, these pigments are inter-mixable stable colours.
Please note you will need to do some testing and some trial and error! but as a rough guide:
Yellow Ochres mixed with Brown Umber makes a light brown Oak
Brown Umber make pale brown to a light chocolate brown - light to medium Oak.
Brown Umber mixed with some vegetable black make medium to dark brown Oak
Burnt Sienna mixed with Red Ochre and Brown Umber makes red mahogany - rosewood colour
Burnt Sienna mixed with some Brown Umber makes a brown Georgian mahogany

Liberon Tack Cloths Pack of 10 Cloths
- Use it whenever there is dust in your home, car, workshop, etc.
- Resin impregnated cloth is ideal for removing dust and lint from any surface prior to staining, waxing, lacquering, French polishing or colouring.
- Can be used and re-used many times over.
- Wax and silicone free.
Liberon tack cloths are excellent for removing dust from all surfaces. Although I mainly only use these myself when woodturning - prior to applying sanding sealer, stains or finishes. I have found that if you don’t use a tack cloth then you just trap microscopic dust particles under your final finish and spoil the overall finish on close inspection. Whilst you can use a damp cloth to remove dust, a damp cloth will raise the grain slightly, which you need to sand back down and this defeats the purpose.
These Tack Cloths each come in their own sealed plastic bag, so you only use one cloth at a time and the rest stay fresh. Each cloth is reusable time and time again, I put it back in the bag after use to stop it gathering dust and one tack cloth will last me a long time.
