You\'re offerding on \"Life, Explorations And Public Services Of John Charles Fremont\", by Charles Wentworth Upham, first edition published 1856 by Ticknor & Fields, Boston. Fremont (1813-1890) was a singular character on the historical stage of the 19th Century, and one of the most interesting American figures of any era. Best known today, perhaps, as a western explorer who led four exploratory surveys of the American West in the 1840s, as evidenced by his name being affixed to towns, counties, mountain peaks, waterways and numerous other natural and man-made points of interest all over that part of the country. He also served as an officer in the Mexican War, which ended in controversy when he refused to give up the Military Governorship of California upon the appearance of the presidentially appointed Governar - leading to his courtmartial, which was a sensation at the time - ultimately he was pardoned by President Polk, and later served as the Union Commander of the Department of the West in the Civil War, serving ably and, amongst other things, basically discovering Ulysses S. Grant, before a rift with Lincoln led to his dimissal in 1861. This book was probably published in anticipation of Fremont\'s nomination as the first candidate for President of the newly founded Republican Party in 1856 - an election he lost, perhaps to the detriment of the nation, to James Buchanan and the Democrats.
The book is in good overall condition for age and type - boards show some spotting, and some fade of the cloth on the spine, but still appealing with nice stamped Victorian-period design on brown boards. Binding is solid, some foxing on the frontispiece portrait and title page opposite, but otherwise pages are clean with some occasional spots but no widespread issues or concerns. A blank front endpaper appears to be missing, but otherwise book appears complete with all content, including several full-page illustration plates.
Nice example - please review photos carefully to make your own determination of overall condition and appeal, and don\'t hesitate to ask any questions prior to offerding - thanks for looking!
