Known as “Lincoln’s Avenger,” Corbett (1832-?) remains one of the most enigmatic figures in history. An extraordinarily eccentric evangelical hatter form Boston who, as a member of the 16th New York Cavalry in 1865, he pursued and killed John Wilkes Booth. Corbett was so obsessed by his Christianity that he kept his hair long (as Jesus would have) and even castrated himself to avoid temptation by women. After the Civil War, he removed to Kanas where he was committed to the inane asylum after attempting to break up a meeting in the legislature with a revolver. He escaped the asylum in 1888 and disappeared forever. Bold, resonant carte photograph, blank back, only a hint of age.
A clean specimen… extremely desirable!Needless to say, this is a genuine original, period piece, not a copy or reproduction.
