Gettysburg has allowed me to learn much about the Civil War. Over the years I have been fortunate to
collected civil war items. As my collection
grew, I realized that I needed to somehow document where these items were
believed to have originated from. Many
items that I have collected come with some type of story passed day through
generations. I quickly learned that it
is almost impossible to confirm these historic accounts. So when I acquire civil war items, I assign
an identification number to each item so I can keep track where these items
came from and the story associated with them.
Although I am unable to confirm these accounts from former owners, I do
my best to record and document each item. All the items that I have purchased
over the years came from privately owned land surrounding the Battle of
Gettysburg. These items tend to surface
at public estate sales and from other private collectors.
These civil war bullets was found in a barn along the
Emmitsburg Road in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania along with many other civil war
items. This was the area that saw a
horrific battle on the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg.
The farmers who owned the land for generations
would find many civil war relics over the years as they tended to their fields.
We must understand that farmers in the civil war time period and for many years
later simply worked their field by hand, so it was not uncommon to find these
items. It was not like it is in the
present time, where farmers use large machinery to work their fields.
The family that owned this farm for generations decided to
sell the farm in the 1980’s after the death of the primary owner. The family also held an estate sale for
all of his personal belongings. Among
items sold at this sale was many civil war artifacts that had been found on
his land over the many decades since the Civil War Battle. The family explained how the generations of
farmers of the land would find items and simply place them in a wood crates in
the main barn. Over the years they
compiled a vast collection of items.
The family also explained that some of the farmers would simply give
items to visitors who were interested in learning about the civil war.
I have decided to down size my current collection and offer
these items to other people who are interested in the Civil War. I have also donated 100's of relics from
this same collection to teachers and schools all over the US. This is a piece
of American History that our children should learn about and teach their
children. I have learned over the years
that holding a civil war relic in one’s hand brings the story of the Battle of
Gettysburg alive. It catches the
child’s attention and they become interested in this historic event. Please help your children to learn from this
time in history, in the hopes that events such as the Civil war will not be
repeated in the future.
