Live Steam Catatonk Climax Locomotive-1:20.3 Scale-handbuilt By Mike Chaney For Sale
You are offerding on a 1:20.3 scale live steam locomotive, the Catatonk Climax. This is one of a group of custom Climax engines handmade by Mike Chaney around 2005. Locomotive is gas fired, using either straigh butane of propane/butane mix. They were imported to the USA by Ron Brown of Steam in the Garden. Of all the variety of live steam locomotives made by Mike Chaney, the Climax was his crowning achievement...the functional design is excellent, with the boiler size being perfectly matched to the water pump, lubricator, and gas tank...run time averages 40-50 minutes. When set up properly, the axle pump provides just the right amount of water to replenish the boiler so that stopping for manual top ups are not needed. There is a hand pump built into the water tender for resupply to the boiler at beginning of runs. Everything has been thought of on this locomotive, in addition to those already mentioned, the engine features a water gauge, boiler blow down valve, adjustable displacement lubricator with drain, extra plugged bushings for accessories, water bypass valve for installed axle pump, and a radient gas burner (which has been recently rebuilt to like new performance). This is an outstanding engine for beginning live steamers as is is very forgiving and easy to operate. My younger son was able to operate this locomotive with adult supervision from the age of 8. Experienced operators will enjoy the challenge of setting up the controls for perfect balance of axle pump to gas burner function for maximum run time. The unique thing about these Chaney Climaxes is that the valve gear functions just like the prototype. The proper D-Valves operate correct valve gear that is located under the boiler between the frame. Reverse functions as on the prototype, and the bevel gearing arrangement transfers power from the cylinder rods through a cross shaft and then longitudinal shafts just as on the full size engine.Operation of this model is outstanding...eight minutes from cold to steam, then continuous operation for 40-50 minutes with minimal action needed by the driver. This is by far the best functioning live steam locomotive I have operated...I am only selling to help finance the construction of a one-off live steam build I am doing. Buyer agrees to actual cost of shipping via USPS or FedEx Ground in USA, including cost of bubble wrap and two boxes fitting inside one another so that this engine can be safely double boxed for shipping. I have safely shipped live steam engines worldwide using this packaging technique which has worked well. Figure on shipping cost in USA of about $75. sale is listed at set shipping rate of $75, but buyer agrees to actual cost which is determined by buyer's location. International buyers welcome and shipped at cost....shipping weight will be slightly less than 20 pounds.Offered with a low starting price and , so offer with confidence. Good Luck and Happy Hunting...

Please note:
sale also includes owner's manual, tool for adjusting valves during operation, and headlight casting.
Several have asked about the Headlight for this locomotive... I do have the headlight casting for this locomotive, and it will be included in this sale...I had Mike Chaney build
the locomotive with the headlight not installed...his typical technique on the
Climax was to permanently solder the headlight on...this makes it difficult to
make the light functional.By having the headlight casting separate, it is to be held on with two small bolts in holes alreadyexisting in theheadlightbracketat front of smokebox...since it is removable making it functional will be much easier for the new owner. There are articles in the press for using button batteries for a self contained headlight...this would be ideal for the Climaxapplication.
