Beautifulvintage browband style headstall from the 1960-70's indark oil leather and loaded from poll to bit end and everywhere in-between, with eye popping silver. This headstall is close to a one of a kind with the amount of silver and was a custom made piece. The crown buckle is marked as shownwith the STERLING stamp, the rosettes I don't see markedand the rest of the silveris stitched permanently into the leather or too small to be marked-but it is apparent due to the amount of black patina on this lovely headstall that this is indeed sterling silver and a high end piece.
A really cool feature is that this headstall has two adjustment buckles on the throatlatch, one on each side, allowing you to custom fit this to your horse, but it also balances out the headstall visually fromboth sides and not a feature often done. There are 28 handengraved bar conchos running up and down both cheeks and alsoflanking the large scalloped piece in the center of the browband. The 1 3/4" bridle rosettes with bit ends to match are beautifully hand engraved. Most of the silver on this piece is Kustom Kraft pattern from Don Wiess' shop when he was operating in California. I believe he either did the leather work there or had an outside leather shop create this to order-or provided another maker with the silver. The leather is in good used condition, showslight show ring use over the yearsand probably could use detailing in spots but as it is isready to useand quite clean. There is some rubbing at the end of the browband and on the back side from the bridle rosettes, it should not affect use in my opinion and won't be seen during use. Also I see a splice near the end of the crown strap but it is evident that it is original to the headstall asthe stitching and leather match perfectly - I do show it in the closeup but it is so well done you can't see it unless closely scrutinizing in person.
On the longestsetting the headstallmeasures 43" long and on the smallest setting is 37" based on the holes currently punched. The browband has a total length of 15".
