Description
Loetz Kugelvase "Texas" pattern with Empire Glass Garland Overlay 1904-05
This beautiful vase is unusual for being clear. The top of the form is fluted into three rounded folds that billow gracefully down into the bulbous centre of the body.
Each pinched fold is crowned with a small ball of gold glass decorated with raised gold dots in a deeper amber. A rounded band of draped garland decorated in the same gold dots is sinuously draped between the balls. Rounded, tapered, gold raised pendants then drop from each ball between the bands of garland.
"Texas" refers to the Latin "texere" meaning "to weave". Indeed, the undulating ribbons of glass threads that form the body of the vase are reminiscent of Fortuny pleating. The vase curves down to a rounded, flattened bottom that pinches into the smoothened puntil.
The Loetz factory took first place for its innovative glass ware at the Paris Exhibition in 1889. After that win Loetz remained one of the most famous makers of art glass in the Czech-German region until the beginning of WWII. The feather-like designs for which they became famous were achieved by wrapping a hot piece of glass with equally hot glass threads and then pulling those threads to make designs while the material was still malleable. The factory burned to the ground in 1940.
This elegant piece of art glass would make a handsome addition to any modern decor or art glass collection.
Marked: No mark, typical of production after 1901. The puntil is broken off and then polished flat (depicted).
Measures: 5 1/4" " H x 4 1/2 "across at the top.
Excellent condition: Absolutely no chips, cracks or restoration. All three sides are shown below.
