Long 18th C. English Scottish Cavalry Basket Hilt Back Sword 44"
I have purchased 3 antique 18th century swords out of the same estate. All 3 will be listed here today on ,without reserve. Please see my other listings for the other two swords.
This listing is for an antique 18 th century Scottish long basket hilt sword. The overall length of the sword is 44 inches or 112 cm. The blade itself measures 38 inches or 96 cm long.
This is a truly impressive and rare example of the Scottish horseman's broadswords dating to the early to mid 1700's. The sword has a single edge blade and I believe this was strictly for cavalry action, as the blade is a bit long for a foot soldier to wield with effectiveness.
The steel basket hilt is very handsome. The hand grip is embossed leather. The embossing is foliate in design and the hand grip has it's original wire. This sword is completely intact and solid. The patina is excellent and the blade still has it's original sharp edge. A very efficient fighting weapon in as good as condition that one could hope for.
