Looow Price Civil War Era Soldier's Glass Ink Well 1.75-in Sq W/pen Grooves For Sale
Over the years when we wrote three Civil War books and published an entire series for schools and Scholastic Inc. we built a display in our office of 1) the Soldier's life in camp when not fighting and 2) life back home with the soldier's family. We've sold most of the items now and are just finishing the last of them--with the exception of just a couple we can't seem to part with. The aqua glass inkwell has an interesting story for those not familiar with it. Every one you see has the jagged glass at the top; the wells were shipped mostly to sutlers filled with ink and sealed with the blown glass after the ink was put in. That way they shipped the best and then the soldiers could give it a gentle rap on the top edge and break off the glass that sealed the ink well. A cork was then used to keep it sealed between uses in camp. This bottle/well measures 1.75 inches a side and about 2 inches from base to top. This particular piece is very thick glass; we've seen other that are somewhat thinner overall. We tried to play with the light a bit, but couldn't quite show the top--the bright, washed out image, where you may be able to see the grooves on each side meant to hold the soldier's pen. We're only shipping to the US and this item obviously will require substantial packing material and shipping in a box to ensure its safety so we're charging more ($4.85) than our typically quite low rate. If the shipping costs more than indicated we will pay the difference. If you are a past customer you know that we virtually always charge less than other dealers, and generally that means we pickup $1-$2 of the shipping as a rule.
