Please be sure to click through the large photo gallery below to see the great matchbooks in this collection. The collection comes in a vintage binder about 13X10. Each page holds 20 regular size matchbooks. A few pages have a blank space. Some pages there are a few less because they feature larger matchbooks.
These are mostly from California businesses, including restaurants, bars, cabarets, auto repair shops, military bases with some Reno casino matchbooks and lots of interestingmiscellaneous items, like a matchbook for a candidate for coroner and a very old book from Disneyland Tobacco Shop. It is heavy on San Francisco bars and restaurants and those from around the Bay Area. See below for a list of only a few of those restaurants that include legends in S.F. history.
The matches have been removed from nearly all the matchbooks. The exception are where there are figural matches. And in those cases, the heads in some places have been cut off. Figural matches include a large 4 1/4" X 3 3/8" Town Tavern Straight Rye Whiskey with print on the matches. Heads are cut off. It is marked "Giant Feature Match Books Lion Match Co NYC." There is a very nice book from Fidelity and Deposit bank, celebrating 51st year that includes matches with heads cut off printed with what look like stock certificates and a pop out map of the United States. It is marked "21 Feature Match Book" Lion Match New York" and inside it says "Display Feature Book Match." The Hawaiian Gardens book is from a restaurant in San Jose, a place that featured "America's most unique theater restaurant," including "the largest group of trained frogs in the world." It is marked "Feature Matchbook" and "Lion Match Co San Francisco." The Sam's Hofbrau book has cartoon of waiter carrying beer printed across seven matches, which have the heads cut off.
Matchbooks from military bases includes a wide Camp Swift in Texas, Hobbs Army Air Field, Thunderbird Field, March Field and Stockton Field.
There are many restaurants and bars, including Tommy's Joynt, Bernstein's Fish Grotto, Bucket of blood Saloon, Riverside Cocktail Lounge, Lessas Tavern, Agrella's Tavern, the Cigar Box Restaurant, Shalamar Club, Alturas Bar, The Trocadero, Delano's, Crim's Cabaret, El Morocco's Zebra Lounge, Zombie Village, Finocchio's, Dugan's Gaity Theatre, Pago Pago, the Brown Derby, Jade Palace, the Oyster Loaf, and Jack Snow's Casa Orinda.
