Lot Of 2 Gorgeous 3 Ft Long Estate Antique Lanterns Brass/copper/nickel:
This lot is a pair of large Colonial style outdoor wall carriage house lanterns from a large old plantation estate in southern Maryland. The antique lanterns impart an understated elegance and old world southern style to an entryway. The lanterns are Union Made in the 1940s but are crafted to harken back to an earlier age. Beautiful bevelled lead glass. Both are rewired and have porcelain sockets.
All internal parts are original and solid brass except for the Hickey piece, which is iron. Brass parts are critical so that the piece does not rust. Mounting plates are of solid copper and almost 2 lbs. each. Door hinges and latch are lubricated with high grade marine grease and work beautifully.
The bevelled lead glass windows are all in good shape except for one door pane which has a break in the lower right corner. A shard is missing which is less than 1/4 wide and less than 1/2 long. There are lots of small blemishes which could be polished out. I was advised not to by an antique dealer who thought that would damage the value of the lanterns so I left them alone. One of the pair has slightly compressed top which shows on the roof but is not easily noticed.
For storage or shipping, the 14" leg of the lantern is removed by unscrewing a finial on the bottom. With the leg removed the lantern is now only 18" long. I will package in a crate or other firm material that I will fabricate for shipping and will add the cost to the handling charges.
