This card, printed on lightly textured paper, was one of a series of watercolor paintings by Tyrus Wong reproduced for The Duncan McIntosh Collection by Stoney Brook Press in the early to mid-1960s. Wong, like many other Disney animation alumni, created beautiful holiday cards through the years for several greetings publishers, including Hallmark. There is a generic message inside the card and a more specific one on the back about the artwork.
Born in Canton, China, American-raised Wong graduated from Los Angeles' Otis Art Institute in 1935, and began work at The Walt Disney Studio in 1939. His emotive, impressionistic flair soon caught the eye of Walt Disney, who saw in the young artist's work the poetry he had been seeking to visually personify the forestscape of his in-production animated feature film, Bambi .
Wong's impact on Bambi left an indelible imprint on both the art of animation and in the admiring eyes of his Disney colleagues Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, who wrote that "In contrast to the paintings that showed every detail of tiny flowers, broken branches and fallen logs, Ty had a different approach and certainly one that had never been seen in an animated film before." Tyrus Wong received the Disney Legend Award from The Walt Disney Company in 2001.
Following a 25-year career at Warner Bros. as a motion picture illustrator, Wong retired to create art in many new mediums, including ceramics, lithography and his special passion: decorative and aerodynamic kites.
