This book, by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and beautifully illustrated by Louis Icart, consists of 24 colorful photogravures plus text in French. These volumes were published in 1944 in Paris byLe Vasseur & Co.with a total edition of 1453. The plate size is 5 3/4 x 7 3/4" and the page size is 7 1/2 x 9 1/2". Although originally 1453 copies of these volumes were published, many have been cut up to sell the individual photogravures for framing, so that now less than 1000 complete volumes probably exist. The individual photogravures or etchings often sell on for $30-40, putting the value of the 24 gravures in these volumes at $720-960. These valuable volumes are sold with .
Louis Icart is one of the most popular artists of the art deco period after World War I. He served in the great war and his drawings became very popular with the troops in army publications before the end of the war. Louis Icart's images epitomize the depiction of women during the art deco period. He created in excess of 500 etchings using a combination techniques including drypoint, etching, sugaring and other methods He added hand coloring as described in the limited edition book "Buying Works by Icart." He created full sized etchings and erotic illustrated books that were sold in France and were unsigned. Louis Icart created beautiful pastel enhanced lithographs, posters, unique menu covers, postcards, advertising prints, and oils on canvas. His favorite model, until they were parted by death, was his beloved wife "Fanny." Louis Icart's work remains very popular in Europe and the United States.
