FIRST, THE ITEM DESCRIPTION:LouisMarx tin wind-up Amos \'N\' Andy Fresh Air Taxi is in the original boxwith the original insert card which was intended to be cut up to addadditional play value to the toy. The original inside box flaps wereintended to be removed & cut up to provide additional props toplay with including a wood burning stove & a coat tree with 2coats. My original box is in excellent original condition & hasall the original flaps but the flaps have been reattached &reinforced on the inside with masking tape. The box is firm &square with no holes or rips. The tin wind-up(8” long) is inexcellent working condition & all the parts are original. It haseverything including original clear plastic windshield. The toyexhibits very little play wear & the litho is bright & clean.There is no color fading & the faces of the characters are verybrown as Marx intended. In regards to the wind-up mechanism, alwaysremember to use the gear shift lever to start & stop. Wind-up inthe stop position & then move gear shift forward to get the taximoving & shaking. The wind-up mechanism could use a shot of WD-40aerosol to lubricate & get it to run more freely. It can actsluggishly & I don\'t want to over wind.
Theoriginal box & the cut out insert are both copyright dated 1930Correll & Gosden, the 2 actors who created voiced Amos \'N\' Andyon the radio. The tin toy also has the Correll & Gosden copyrightbut not the 1930 date. Both the toy & box are marked Louis Marx.The toy, box & cut out insert have the Amos \'N\' Andy “GenuineFacsimile Signatures.”
Dueto the immense popularity of the Amos \'N\' Andy radio program launchednationally in March 1928, Louis Marx acted quickly to license thecharacters & produced the tin toy wind-up Fresh Air Taxi. Theyear was 1930. I believe this was Marx\'s 1st licensedcomic character toy. Marx expected the toy to be a huge hit & abest seller. It was not & in fact retail stores returned moreunsold or damaged toys to Marx then any other toy they ever produced.Small parts broke off easily in the toy store & could not besold. The horseshoe hood ornament was the 1st to gofollowed by the the figures of Amos, Andy & the dog. Oh well.
