Louis Wain Postcard: "fun On The Sands". Valentine's Series. Rare. 1918. :
Excellent, rare,'Louis Wain'postcard issued c. 1918 and entitled:"Fun on the Sands". The publisher of the card is Valentine's but there is no series number given on the card. The postcard features no less than seventeen anthropromorphic cats undertaking various activities on the beach. Among these activities there are cats sleeping, photographing, busking, sunbathing, fishing, crabbing (by accident!), selling, entertaining, etc., etc.The largest cats are in deckchairs (Mum and Dad?); heis trying to read his newspaper but a kitten is showering him with seawater whilst the mother cat avoids a banjo-weilding busker's attentions by the simple expedient of sleeping; despite the eagerness of her kitten to wake her. There is a lot going on inthis everyday beachscene except that it iscats who are engaged in the activities rather thanpeople.
The card is postally used and has a divided back; suggesting that it was published after 1902 (when the divided back was introduced). Condition is 'Good' excepting that the postage stamp has been removed (see photograph) and there is a suggestion of glue residue (no damage) on the card's reverse - where it was once stuck within a postcard album. This is a rare postcard which will prove of interest to lovers of cats and to collectors of Louis Wain's work. Over the next few weeks I shall be selling a number of Wain's postcards - keep visiting this site if you are interested.
I am a collector and not a dealer. I am selling because I have too much in the house and adult children who have no interest in my collection(s): Time to move on those itemsindividuals who will appreciate them rather than have them gathering dust. Please e-mail me should you have a question. Good luck should you decide to offer; thank you for looking should you decide against.
