M1850 Foot Officers Sword - Ames Mfg. Co. Dated 1861 & Inspected For Sale
Offered is a M1850 Foot Officers Sword manufactured by the Ames Mfg. Co. Chicopee. Mass. This sword is Dated 1861 on the ricassowith the inspector marks "J.H." The markings are deep and legible. Only 425 Ames FootOfficer swords were delivered to theU.S. Government in 1861. This sword is a high grade example seldom seen on the market and usually not offered on . The pictures show theoutstanding condition of this sword but I will also give a detailed description: The hilt still retainsmostof its gilt but there are areas of untouched patina. The blade is fabulous and would be hard to upgrade even if you could find a dated and inspected Ames. Most of these swordswere issued at the beginning of the war (1861) and are usually not found in this condition. The blade still has its original washer and the sword is very tight and balanced. The etching is of the early style variety as the "U.S." is in block letters, indicating manufacture before 1863 but of course we have a dated specimenin 1861. The "Ames" address on the bladeis clear and legible and all there. The sharkskin grip is all there with areas that show use, just enough to know it is a carried sword. The pommel cap is tight and smooth as it should be, untouched and not messed with. The scabbard has all of its original brass mounts and leather and all there but the leather is weak in one spot about half way up the sword. I took a picture of this spot and you can see in the image where it it located. Care must be taken in handling this scabbard. The sword fits and locks easily into the scabbard but taking it in and out one must be careful not to crack the leather. The rest of the scabbard is tight and the leather in great shape. The "Ames" address is on the top scabbard mount and struck deep and legible. My pictures to not give this itemjustice and cannot display the true beauty of this sword. The sale will have so someone is taking this nice sword home.
