STUNNINGANTIQUE JAPANESE HAND CARVED LACQUER TRAY

Exquisitequality antique Japanese Kamakura bori lacquer tray with brilliant hand lacquered coloration. Displays magnificently, drawing attention from all the way across the room. Amazing, deeply carved flowerscover the entire surface of the tray. Graphically bold and most tactilely pleasing. We have never offered an example as magnificent as this one. It is an astounding piece!
Kamakura-bori features a very unique type of carving with special attention paid to the quality ofdeep carving and rich colors. Its origin is from the middle-age whenmonk artisansmade Buddhist altar equipment following after Cho-shitsu (a technique of carving lacquerware) which came from China.
Quite a long process went into creating fine examples such as this one. Each step takes a great deal of time and attention to detail. First the wood was cut to size, slowly dried, then joined and sanded. Next the artisan carefully drew and carved the design into the piece, a process taking many hours of concentrated work. More sanding smoothed each contour of the design. Next, many layers of lacquer were applied, each requiring time to dry slowly before the next was brushed on.Each layer would have required days to dry under carefully monitored temperature and humidity. After the final drying, the piece was beautifully polished. The entire process took months to complete for apiece of this quality.
This sublime tray would make a fine sculptural display or serving piece for home or office. It is of significant size measuring approximately 15.5\" across and 4 1/8\" high. In excellent antique condition, with a spectacular patina. Bears traces of the original sales tag on the underside. Dates to the early to mid 1900s.
Exhibiting the traditional elegance of the Japanese aesthetic, an exquisite centerpiece for the discriminating collector of world class Asian antiques. Absolutely gorgeous example of the strength and presence of Japanese lacquer ware.
