THE INFORMATION ABOVE has everything you need to order. Now for some observations and musings of my own. You might find it interest reading – but if you skip you won’t miss anything of importance relating to the item for sale.
GRADING: What is up with so many sellers saying “I’m not a professional grader…” You look at their response and some have sold 100’s of comics and have 100’s more for sale but they don’t know how to grade? Be accountable, take a stand. For the record – and while grading is subjective – I know how to grade and if I graded it I stand behind it.
PICTURES: Why are buyers sometimes paying more for raw key issues than they could purchase the same book already professionally graded? Here’s the scenario. The seller lists a key issue in “High Grade”. They are not a professional grader of course but it’s a beautiful book and they have included a number of photos for buyers to look at and “judge for yourself”. The problems here are: 1) “high grade” is generally accepted as VF- (7.5) or better and 2) Beautiful, lovely, excellent and great are adjectives, not grades so mean nothing and 3) You cannot – as CGC notes in their forums on grading – grade a book from pictures. Many defects do not show up in pictures. Yet the hope of getting a raw 9.4 Conan 1 for the 9.0 slabbed price drives certain buyers to pay the 9.0 price for a raw book that is actually no nicer than a CCG or PGX graded 8.0. Wise up folks. As Meatloaf famously sang – “There ain’t no Coupe de Ville hiding in the bottom of a Cracker Jack Box.” If it was 9.4 they’d sell it as such.
RETURNS: I save my most important observation for last. WHY does ANYONE purchase ANYTHING – but especially collectibles – from a seller that lists “all sales are final”? Would you shop at Target if that was their policy? No – you’d go to Wal-Mart instead. “No returns” reveals a deplorable lack of integrity by a seller. They don’t care about you – they just want your money and if you think it’s over graded or not what you expected they don’t want to hear about it. Golly – they told you they weren’t professional graders and they posted up pictures – what more do you want? While Buyer Protection offers an opportunity to eventually resolve such disputes, do you really want to have to wait a month, argue your case and hope it’s settled to your satisfaction? Sales should final when the buyer has had a reasonable period of timeto inspect the items purchases and is satisfied. Buyers would be smart to avoid sellers with a policy of no returns.
