Margot De Taxco Vtg Mexico Mexican Sterling Silver Repousse Necklace

MARGOT DE TAXCO VTG MEXICO MEXICAN STERLING SILVER REPOUSSE NECKLACE

Description

This is a STUPENDOUS vintage sterling silver central pendant that was hand wrought in Taxco, Mexico, after 1948, by silver maestra, MARGOT van VOORHIES CARR (?-1985) of MARGOT de TAXCO. Margot moved to Mexico City with friends from San Francisco in 1937. She was introduced to Antonio Castillo by Antonio's sister, Maria. Antonio and Margot married while Antonio was still working for William Spratling's Las Delicias. Margot would design jewelry that Antonio would produce at night ~ these pieces sold so well that Antonio left William Spratling and Las Delicias and opened LOS CASTILLO with Margot and his brothers. Margot and Antonio divorced after about 10 years and Margot opened MARGOT DE TAXCO in 1948. "As the Stars are to the Night, So are Jewels to the Woman" was on her calling card ~ this statementrepresents Margot's dedication to designing classical and feminine art-to-wear jewelry that is elegantly timeless. Dr. Penny Morrill, well known author and one of the world's leading authorities onvintage Mexican silver, has authored newest "must have' collector's/art book,Margot Van Voorhies ~ The Art of Mexican Enamelwork~ you may purchase this book online or at your favorite book store. Margot de Taxco jewelry is a wonderful investment and the value will only appreciate with time.

This spectacular central pendant is masterfully crafted in a classically elegant and sophisticated motif that has a wonderful baroque look. Margot consistently marked her jewelry with a design number and her all sterling pieces were numbered 5100 through 5790 ~ this central pendant is design #5184. Los Castillo made a necklace with the same central pendant which makes sense since Margot was responsible for many of their early designs before she and Antonio divorced and Margot opened her own shop. The Los Castillo necklace is featured on page 100, photo plate VI-10, in Dr. Morrill's book on Margot that is mentioned in the previous paragraph ~ it is also featured in MEXICAN SILVER by Dr. Penny Morrill and Carole Berk on page 85, photo plate VI-10. The central pendant (3-3/4" long and 2-1/2" wide) is made of two sterling repousse brooches that hook together at the center ~ they are exquisitely detailed with a lovely orchestration of feminine scroll flourishes, demi spheres, foliate designs, demi spheres, and a multitude of silver bead accents. Repoussage is a technique where malleable metal (such as sterling silver) is shaped or ornamented by hammering from the back or underside. This technique is extremely time consuming and can take an artist an entire day or several days to complete just one piece. The locking pin clasps work as they should and there is a hook and "eye" at the top on either side of the central pendant. The original Margot necklace that went with this central pendant had stylized foliate links similiar to the foliate designs in the central pendant ~ please see the last photo for an example. My jeweler configured the hook and clasp on a circa 1930's Mexican sterling repousse double swirl necklace (marked "STERLING, MEXICO") so that it attachs perfectly to the central pendant. To put the necklace on, you simply unhook one side of the necklace, put the necklace around your neck, and refasten the necklace to the central pendant. The links on the necklace are pin hinged or riveted together which attests to the quality of the necklace! Since the connections don't show, the necklace has beautiful, uninterrupted design flow. This is such a versatile piece ~ wear the brooches together or individually, wear the brooches as a central pendant with the vintage Mexican silver repousse necklace, or wear the necklace alone (wearable length is 15-1/4" which is choker length). The silver has acquired a wonderful, soft patina that reflects the shadows created by the depth of the designs. Vintage MARGOT art-to-wear pieces are becoming harder to find on the market and are sought by serious vintage Taxco jewelry collectors worldwide ~ this is an authentic VINTAGE Margot de Taxco central pendant, not a new piece made from Margot's jewelry molds. This romantic and sumptuous necklace is extremely well made and crafted in an artistic and timeless design that is extraordinary ~ it is heirloom and collector quality ~ quite simply,THE BEST!!!

SIZE: Central Pendant: Length is 3-3/4", width is 2-1/2". Central Pendant with necklace: Inside circumference when closed is 18-1/2", width/drop is 2-1/2", width of necklace links is 5/8", and weight is 94.1 grams.

CONDITION:Excellent vintage condition ~ no dents or dings to the silverwork ~ minor surface scratches consistent with loving wear and age (and actually desirable on vintage pieces) ~ no damage noted ~ just about PERFECT used condition!

HALLMARKS: Central pendant: "MARGOT DE TAXCO, 5184 (design number) the "8" isn't legible due to location of mark/please see photo, STERLING, MADE IN MEXICO, and the Eagle 16 assay mark" Necklace: "STERLING, MEXICO". MARGOT VAN VOORHIES CARR/MARGOT DE TAXCO is shown on pages 194-196 in Bille Hougart's highly respected source book, The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks(2013 edition). BILLE HOUGART'S NEW THIRD EDITION IS NOW AVAILABLE HERE ON OR AT YOUR FAVORITE ONLINE OR BRICK & MORTAR BOOK STORE.

PLEASE NOTE: For Mexican jewelry artists and designers, silver is their canvas. In their hands, craft meets creativity and silver becomes wearable art. The various techniques are like a painter’s brushstrokes ~ they make each piece unique and a timeless object of beauty. Mexican vintage silver jewelry is handwrought, and therefore, not perfect ~ each piece will have variances that indicate that the piece is hand made. Vintage pieces will show various signs of wear since they have been pre-loved ~ items are described to the best of my ability and any damage will be noted.
