Matl Matilde Poulat Vtg Mexico Mexican Sterling Silver Palomas Pendant Necklace

MATL MATILDE POULAT VTG MEXICO MEXICAN STERLING SILVER PALOMAS PENDANT NECKLACE

Description

This is a STUPENDOUS sterling silver repousse pendant/brooch that was hand wrought in Mexico, circa 1934 to 1940, by master silver designer and artist, MATILDE POULAT of MATL. Maestra Poulat was a painter and designer and after studying at the San Carlos Academy of Art, she opened her shop "MATL" in 1934. "MATL" is a variation of the Aztec word for water. MATL designs are some of the most unique and beautiful in Mexican jewelry. Matilde trained her nephew, Ricardo Salas, as a jeweler and he worked by her side until her death in 1960, and continued making MATL treasures after her death which were marked MATL, along with "Salas" and/or "MS-12". Matl jewelry has been showcased in galleries and museums worldwide. This pendant/brooch has the earliest MATL mark, an embossed "MATL" in all capital letters. This spectacular pendant/brooch is masterfully crafted in an artistic and timeless motif that is exquisitely detailed. The brooch consists of several separate design elements that culminate into a spectacular work-of-art! The center of the top portion has a luscious emerald cut dark purple amethyst stone that is in a raised bezel setting with three silver disk with bead accents at the top and a silver scroll accent at the bottom ~ on either side of the amethyst stone, there are two sweet silver repousse palmomas (doves) with red coral eyes ~ the doves have hand chased floral designs. The top has a silver scroll with a multitude of silver bead accents and bezel set dark green turquoise cabochons with silver bead accents. The bottom has more bezel set dark green turquoise cabochons with silver bead accents, silve scrolls and silver disks with silver bead centers. There are five tear drop shaped silver dangles ~ this piece has GREAT movement! This pendant/brooch has repousse work, delicate texturing, hand chasing, scrollwork, bezel set gemstones, and teeny tiny silver beads ~ all of which was done by hand and took many, many hours to produce! There is a locking pin clasp on the back that works as it should, along with a permanent silver bail. The silver has acquired a wonderful, soft patina that reflects the shadows created by the depth of the designs. I am including a new Mexican sterling silver collar so that the winner can immediately wear this magnificent pendant as a necklace. This is a versatile piece since it can either be worn as a pendant with the silver collar, or alone as a brooch. This pendant/brooch is extremely well made in an endearing design by MATILDE POULAT of MATL ~ sure to bring forth lots of compliments ~ literally, a piece of art history to wear and love ~ it is heirloom and collector quality ~ quite simply, THE BEST!!!

SIZE: Pendant/brooch: Length is 3", width is 3-1/4", and weight is 42 grams. Necklace: Inside circumference is 15-1/2" plus the 2" opening in the back for a total of 17-1/2" (is somewhat adjustable), width is 1/4", and weight is 16.8 grams. Total weight of set is 58.8 grams.

CONDITION: Excellent vintage condition ~ no dents or dings to the silverwork ~ no chips, cracks or damage to amethyst stone (only naturally occurring inclusions and color variances inherent to Mexican amethysts), turquoise stones (only naturally occurring matrix), or coral stones ~ minor surface scratches consistent with loving wear and age (and actually desirable on vintage pieces) ~ just about PERFECT used condition!

HALLMARKS: The earliest MATL mark "MATL" embossed in all capital letters. Collar Necklace: "MEX, 925". MATILDE POULAT and this style hallmark (photo P-119) are shown on page 158 in Bille Hougart's highly respected source book, The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks (2006 edition). Mr. Hougart indicates that Matilde Poulat used this hallmark circa 1934 to 1940.

PLEASE NOTE: For Mexican jewelry artists and designers, silver is their canvas. In their hands, craft meets creativity and silver becomes wearable art. The various techniques are like a painter’s brushstrokes ~ they make each piece unique and a timeless object of beauty. Mexican vintage silver jewelry is handwrought, and therefore, not perfect ~ each piece will have variances that indicate that the piece is hand made. Vintage pieces will show various signs of wear since they have been pre-loved ~ items are described to the best of my ability and any damage will be noted.
