A civic booster, he helped organize the Chicago World's Fair (1893) and promoted a grand race of horseless carriages, won on a snowy Thanksgiving Day, 1895 by Frank Duryea. Kohlsaat wrote a book of political reminiscences, From McKinley to Harding.
