Matthew Calbraith BUTLER (1836-1909), elected to the South Carolina legislature in 1860, became a Confederate cavalry officer, losing a foot at the Battle of Brandy Station (1863). Remaining on active duty, he rose to the rank of Major General, commanding a division by the end of the Civil War. He represented South Carolina in the U.S. Senate (1877-1895). After the U.S. victory, he served as a commissioner supervising withdrawal of Spanish troops from Cuba. Herman H. KOHLSAAT, who had made his fortune in the bakery business, was owner of the "Chicago Times Herald" newspaper. A civic booster, he helped organize the Chicago World's Fair (1893) and promoted a grand race of horseless carriages, won on a snowy Thanksgiving Day, 1895 by Frank Duryea. Kohlsaat wrote a book of political reminiscences, From McKinley to Harding. Nathan Oakes MURPHY (1849-1900), a Republican born in Maine, was Secretary of the Arizona Territory (1889), Governor (1892-1893) and Congressional delegate from the territory (1895-1897).
