THIRD, LAST AND COMPLETE
AND HOUSEHOLD PHYSICIAN
OR PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE FOR THE PEOPLE
This sale is for an original1902 edition of the "THIRD, LAST AND COMPLETE RECEIPT BOOK AND HOUSEHOLD PHYSICIAN, OR PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE FOR THE PEOPLE" published by F. B. Dickerson Company of Detroit, Mich. and Windsor, Ont.
YOU MAY SAY THIS BOOK, FOR ITS TIME, IS LIKENED TO THE 21ST CENTURY GOOGLE OF FACTS!
Dr. Alvin Wood Chase (20 March 1817- 25 May 1885) earned his M.D. from the Cincinnati Eclectic Medical Institute, after a short course. "Dr. Chase's Recipes or, Information for Everybody," which he compiled, printed, and marketed himself, met with great success and was published in many editions from 1856 onward.
In 1872, after he regretfully sold the copyright for "Dr. Chase's Recipes" and many other assets to Rice Aner Beal, he tried to recoup lost income and published "Dr. Chase's Family Physician, Farrier, Bee Keeper and Second Receipt Book" - which embroiled him in a legal battle with Beal.
Just before he died, Chase finished writing Dr. Chase's Third, Last and Complete Receipt Book And Household Physician", which was subsequently published with an"MEMORIAL" recounting the details of Chase's life.
This volume wonderfully compiles all the former works Chase has ever published which date back to Pre Civil War life. While modern technology and the internet have provided up to date methods, this is an excellent reference book.
If you were curious as to "HOW" families in the 19th Century lived and survived, this large compiled volume gives you a small glimpse of how life was lived, how things were done, supplying coping mechanisms for the sick, diseases and remedies, COOKING AND RECIPES, and most of all, farming. All these antidotes were comprised from a collection of methods and "tried and true" techniques . This book has lots of great information on who to do anything:
You can make your own writing ink, birth a calf, clean hardwood floors, grow a prolific garden, treat illnesses; the list is ENDLESS. What's neat about this book is thereare provision spaces allotted for your own "additions" or personal miscellaneous receipts from pages 625-632.
At the time this book was published only one other book outsold it, and only by a small margin, the BIBLE. If the worth of a book correlates to its full title, this book is one of the most valuable on earth.
This book is based from the life-long observations of the Author, embracing the choicest, most valuable and entirely new receipts in every department of MEDICINE, MECHANICS, AND HOUSEHOLD ECONOMY including a treatise on THE DISEASES OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN, with remarks and explanations which adapt it to the every day "wants" of the people, arranged in departments and most copiously indexed.
