Original Medieval Illuminated Manuscript Book of Hours Leaf, Paris, c. 1420-40
Text: PSALM 5
"In the morning I will stand before thee, and will see: because thou art not a God that willest iniquity. Neither shall the wicked dwell near thee: nor shall the unjust abode before thy eyes..."
IM-10628: An original leaf from a medieval illuminated manuscript Book of Hours. Red-ruled for 15 lines of text, written in Latin in with dark brown ink, on animal vellum. NINE one-line illuminated initials and SEVEN illuminated line-extenders in burnished gold on red and blue ground with delicate white penwork. This leaf measures 197 x 138 mm (7 3/4 x 5 1/2”).
THE TEXT (ON BOTH SIDES) IS SURROUNDED ON 3 SIDES WITH AN ELEGANT RINCEAUX PANEL BORDER IN A DELICATE FLORAL MOTIF WITH IVY LEAVES IN RED, BLUE, GREEN, ORANGE AND BURNISHED GOLD. ONE ILLUMINATED BAR EXTENDING BEYOND THE LENGTH OF THE TEXT IN RED, BLUE AND BURNISHED GOLD.
This Book of Hours leaf was scribed in Northern France, Paris, c. 1420-40. This is an original, not a reproduction and its condition is excellent, as shown in the photos.
The one-line illuminated "M" begins Psalm 5: 5-11: ''Mane...'' (In the morning I will stand before thee, and will see: because thou art not a God that willest iniquity. Neither shall the wicked dwell near thee: nor shall the unjust abode before thy eyes. Thou hatest all the workers of iniquity: thou wilt destroy all that speak a lie. The bloody and the deceitful man the Lord will abhor. But as for me in the multitude of they mercy, I will come into thy house; I will worship towards thy holy temple, in thy fear. Conduct me, O Lord, in thy justice: because of my enemies, direct my way in thy sight...).
