Medieval Manuscript Calendar Leaf, February, Vellum, France, C.1475. For Sale
This is a calendar leaf from
a Book of Hours for the month of February produced c.1475.
The leaf contains many
entries that make the place of Use difficult to determine. Although not an English production, there
are indications that it could have been written for an English person and that
the Use could be for Rome. This would
probably make the place of origin Flanders (Bruges?).
The size of the leaf is 127mm
x 98mm (5ins. x 3 8/10ins.).
This is not a calendar leaf
that has a Saint for each day. The
original owner only had included those feasts that he (or she) wished to
venerate. The only certainty is that
the calendar is not for the Use of Paris.
Of the twenty-three entries there are twelve, and part of another, that
are not found in Paris calendars.
These are: -
3rd.Triphois. 17th.Germanici.
6th.Dorothee virg. 18th.Hugonis epi.
8th.Sabibi epi. 19th.Severiani
11th.Bonifacii epi. 25th.Constancie vg.
13th.Fusce virg. 26th.Metriani mr.
15th.Faustini. 28th.Polioti mr.
This is a strange
calendar. The inclusion of Gilbert,
the canonisation of bishop Hugh, Scholastica, Germanus of Auxerre and Boniface
of Ross (even though some are not against their correct feast days) could
indicate that it was made for an English person. A Book of Hours for the Use of Rome could have had a calendar
that included Gilbert, Dorothy, Constance and Polioti. The probability, therefore, is that the
Book of hours was made in Bruges, Flanders.
This
is quite a nice little leaf that requires further research to establish its
origins.
