This promotional image of a Disney limited edition hand-painted cel is entitled “La Conga” and it recreates Scene 28 from Walt Disney’s animated short “Mickey’s Birthday Party” (1942). In this scene, while the gang waits for Goofy to finish baking Mickey’s birthday cake, Minnie shakes the maracas and Donald leads off the Conga line. Following Donald are Clara Cluck, Horace Horsecollar, Clarabell Cow, Minnie and Mickey. The full 3-ring binder page measures 11” x 8 ¾”; the image of the cel alone measures 4 “ x 3”, and the image including the frame measures 8 ¾ “ x 4 ½ ”. This piece was released in 1993. The back of the page has two columns of textual information on “The Story”, “The Artwork” and “Facts about the Film”.~ * ~ * ~ This is a piece of laminated Disney promotional art which was sold to licensed Disney Animation Art Galleries during the 1990’s. We owned and operated an animation art gallery in Rochester, NY from 1990 through 2005 which is how we came to own this. It is a smaller, high quality representation of a cel which galleries could order through Disney at the time. They had hundreds of different images available and obviously no gallery could have an actual cel in stock for every single piece Disney offered, so galleries could buy these small laminated copies of the Disney artwork which was designed to be shown in a 3-ring binder so potential customers could flip through and get a good luck at all the artwork available. Obviously these are not worth nearly what the actual art pieces would go for, (thousands of dollars in some cases), but these are fairly rare as Disney would not have made that many of them because they were never available to the general public. What you are looking at here is not a copy of any kind – it is an officially licensed product purchased by us directly from the Disney Studio. If you’re a fan of a particular movie or character this is a nice way to pick up a nice piece of licensed Disney artwork which looks beautiful and also has a nice collectible angle working for it.
