Approximately 15" long by 8" wide.
This is an intense brutalist sculpture. The form is superb and the sculptor's
sense of texture is deliciously severe. A fowl in brutalist form, this
piece seems almost pterodactyl-like in appearance!
Sharp creases, striated body form and lots of jags and ridges
make this a delight to observe at any angle.
Brutalism, when done well is always a delight for the eyes
providing almost tactile delight as they flow across the surface
of a sculpture. In the fifties, if you were a modernist, brutalist pieces
were all the rage. ARTS magazine was like a candy store
of Gallery showings from throughout the nation. Most were
in the NYC area. Abstract brutalism was featured
regularly, from artists who were defying convention, and the three
dimensions of sculpture were considered the most expressive. This piece is unsigned. It's style is clearly influenced by
some of Giacometti's animal sculptures he did from 1956-1958
and which were shown in the Matisse Gallery in early 1958.
We would estimate this piece to date from that period 1958-59.This sculpture is in great condition and shows
typical age wear to the wood base. This sculpture will look AMAZING on
a credenza, desk or Brutalist Treasure For
