MILTON CANIFF Three signed 1967 panels from Milton Caniff's cartoon strip Steve Canyon Original art signed "MILTON/CANIFF" in panel 3. Pencil notations at top and bottom edge. B/w, 23x7¼ overall, 21¾x6½ cartoon, one surface, drawn on cardstock. ©1967. Caniff (1907-1988, born in Hillsboro, Ohio) created the popular comic strip Terry and the Pirates in 1934. He and Noel Sickles of the Scorchy Smith strip collaborated on each other's work and together pioneered what came to be known as the "cinematic style" of comic strips. (Caniff's work was admired by Orson Welles and Federico Fellini; both corresponded with him) After a dispute with the Chicago Tribune-New York Daily News Syndicate over copyrights, Caniff left Terry in 1946 to start a new, equally successful cartoon series, Steve Canyon. Caniff twice won the Reuben Award for best cartoonist of the year: for Terry and the Pirates in 1946 and for Steve Canyon in 1971. Lightly toned and bowed. Normal lead, blue and red pencil artistic tracings. Tackholes at top corners. Lightly rounded and worn corners. Adhesive residue at left edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
