This is an outstanding find of a breathtaking, mint condition, working, handcarved, three bird cuckoo clock that was created about 25 years ago in the Black Forest of Triberg "Germany" and signed on the movement by "Hubert Herr, one of the finest clock makers in this region of the world! According to Reinhard Herr (Hubert's Grandson), this clock is made entirely of cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest and has been the wood of choice for carvers here since the 1870's. It's a large clock and adorned with seven deeply carved wood grape leaves on the front and another is found on the wooden pendulum. The carvings are exceptional, deep, intricate, and wavy on the case of the clock and finished in a blend of walnut tones; very nice! There is a nicely carved wooden bird on either side of the case looking away from each other from across the dial and possibly looking up to the large carved wooden bird at the very top of the clock looking as though he's ready to take flight. The dial has a woodtone backdrop and features white Roman numerals to mark the hours and fancy matching hands to point out the time. The clock has a fitted wood back and latches securely. It easily removes to allow access to the pristine, weight driven mechanical movement inside the case signed by Hubert Herr. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. Hubert Herr left nothing to chance and made (still makes) his own movements. The bellow tubes are intact and the tops look good; sound good too! At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small door above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a nice sounding chime inside the case before retreating back inside the clock, closing the door behind him. The bird reappears at the top of each hour and correctly cuckoos/chimes the current number of hours before retreating to the safe confines of the inner clock; fascinating! There is a metal lever on the side of the case that allows you to disable or enable the cuckoo and chiming activity should you desire to do so. The clock works quite well here, keeps good time, and cuckoos as it should though being a lightly used old clock and we don't know the service history, some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock arrives at its new home...but I doubt it. The clock has been working in my office all week and hasn't missed a beat. Nonetheless, we always recommend to our clock customers to service their antique or vintage clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a great clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached golden metal chains, a large wooden grape leaf pendulum, a "Genuine Black Forest" hanging tag, and two rather heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. I've looked the clock over fairly well and can't find any issues, damage, missing pieces, or signs of use. It is in mint condition! It is an impressive clock and equally so in size measuring about 12" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 6" or so at its deepest point, and about 9" across the top. This clock is just stunning and a great nostalgic look back at the greatness of Black Forest workmanship. It will turn a few heads when displayed in your home, office, or wherever it is that you care to showcase a very nice, carved cuckoo clock with a genuine Black Forest legacybehind it. offer with confidence; I have no doubt that you will absolutely adore this clock!
