THE MOBILE BASIN AND TENNESSEE RIVER IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION,
Improved Waterways to the Gulf of Mexico, Water Transportation
and The Development of Hydroelectric Power
edited by Marie Bankhead Owen
Birmingham, Alabama: Birmingham Printing Co., no date but ca. 1927, pp 111 + 3 folding maps (one of them large) + a few b&w halftone photo illustrations of prominent politicians of the day including the editor's brother, U S Senator John Bankhead (from Alabama).
Issued as Number 8 in the so-called "Historical and Patriotic Series" of the Alabama State Dept. of Archives of which Mrs. Owen was director.
Though this booklet has much historical value now in the wake of the subsequent development of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, the subsequent development of hydroelectric power by the Alabama Power Company and the subsequent expansion of the Harbor of Mobile. However,at the time it was published it was a blatant misuse of state funds earmarked for historic preservation. Mrs. Owen issued this booklet under the auspices of the Alabama Dept. of Archives but make no mistake: its purpose was to promote the political career of her brother and the Bankhead familyand the private development of Alabama resources by privately owned, for-profit companies.
At the time it was issued, it was a political booklet and a private promotional booklet but paid for with state money.
Small scuff on front cover the affects the letters "B" and "I" in the word "MOBILE" else a VGcopy with 3 nice folding maps. The largest map, showing the JADIN PLAN of Flood Control has a 2" rough spot at the very top edge of the map, outside of the border of the map. Another map shows a very early plan for connecting the TENNESSEE RIVER to MOBILE BAY via the Tennessee Tombigbee Waterway.
(the fine print ... [sigh] ... but please read :-)
