MODERNIST CERAMIC ART GLAZED STONEWARE BAS-RELIEF, 2-D HANGING CRUCIFIX, OF WHITE SHROUDED CHRIST ON THE CROSSMid-Century ModernOffered is this just superb example of Modernist figurative iconography, in this case, applied to the iconic Christian figure of Christ on the Cross. It is a bas-relief, 2-dimensional figurative crucifix, executed in stoneware, resembling a cookie-cutter Christmas sugar cookie. The fired stoneware is glazed with high-gloss reflective glaze but also has unglazed areas of its surface, creating a duopoly of finishes on the figurine. The deliciously stylized figure of Christ, has a thin beard, halo (denoting a figure very close to God) is wearing a white shroud, complete with marks on both the hands and feet, where he was nailed to the cross on Cavalry Hill, in Golgotha, near a gate to the ancient city of Jerusalem. Both Catholic and Protestant iconography of the Modernist period, reflected the changing aesthetic around them, and we especially see depictions of Christ, that also mirror what was going on in art and design of the period. Clearly, the manner in which this 2-D glazed stoneware rendition of Christ was made in, reflects the dominant artistic aesthetic of the Modernist period, and in particular, the years 1956-1964. The figure doesn\'t have a scratch on it, flea-bites to its edges, no breaks, hairlines, abrasions or repairs. The crucifix comes with a built-in wire hanger, located at the very top of the figure, looped at the top of the head. The figurine is quite delicate, being made of fired clay and being thin and flat. For it to be in this extraordinary condition, is well, extraordinary. Beautiful.
