Typed-Letter-Signed: “M. Teresa, M. C.”, one page, 5” X 8”, stamped Missionaries of Charity letterhead, Calcutta, July 1991. Mother Teresa writes terrific, uplifting words to no less than eleven girls. In part:
“You may make use of your illness and disability as means to real
holiness. Do not feel bad if you cannot do things like before and never
think you are useless…I invite you to make use of your suffering to draw
souls closer to God.”
“This brings each one of you my prayer for God’s blessing on each one
of you that you may make use of your illness and disability as means to
real holiness. Do not feel bad if you cannot do things like before and
never think you are useless. The Passion of Our Lord, the suffering of
our Lady and of so many Christians through the ages is the greatest
wealth of the church. You too are part of that wealth. I invite you to
make use of your suffering to draw souls closer to God. Those who are
unable to share in our work of love for God’s Poor can become our sick
and suffering Co-Workers. They are a power House of Prayer and a
treasure House of precious graces to the Missionaries of Charity. Each
of you can adopt one of our Sisters spiritually and offer up your
prayers, sufferings and sacrifices for her and her intentions to help
her open to Jesus hearts until now closed. You may write to Ms. Vicki
Schmidt, 8 Stardust Dr. Sherman, IL 62684 USA for the address of our
national link for our sick and suffering co-workers in the US. Allow
Jesus to live His life in you and share His Passion with you.
Mother Teresa (1910-1997) worked for 68 years in India helping the sick and destitute. She established the worldwide Order of the Missionaries of Charity (MC)
in 1950. She did have her critics, who alleged that her Order delivered
poor medical care and that her primary goal was religious conversion,
not charity. But the overwhelmingly favorable judgment of the
international community was better expressed by her Nobel Peace Prize (1979) and many other tributes. In 2002, the Vatican ascribed a healing miracle to her, and in 2003, Pope John Paul II beatified Mother Teresa, a step on the road to declaring her a saint.
