A MUSEUM QUALITY 19TH CENTURY PAINT DECORATED PENNSYLVANIA GERMAN SLIDING LID CANDLE BOX, DATED "1834" ALSO BEARING THE INITIALS "MSD". PENNSYLVANIA, POSSIBLY BERK'S COUNTY, CIRCA 1834 IN NATIVE AMERICAN EasterN WHITE PINE IN THE MOST FANTASTIC ORIGINAL PAINTED DECORATION ANDA FULLY DOVETAILED CASE.
A GREAT PIECE OF PENNSYLVANIA GERMAN FOLK ART.
THE PAINT IS ABSOLUTE PERFECT. PROBABLY THE VERY BEST PAINT DECORATED BOX WE HAVE HAD THE PLEASURE OF SELLING IN OVER THIRTY YEARS.
WONDERFUL LATE 18TH-EARLY 19TH CENTURY PENNSYLVANIA GERMAN DESIGNS WITH WHAT APPEARS TO BE A LARGE FLORAL BASKET ON THE LID AND THE GREATEST "SWAGS ON THE BORDER. THE SIDES, FRONT AND BACK ARE IN THE BEST BITTERSWEET AND YELLOW GRAIN PAINT. ON ONE SIDE IS THE DATE "1834" IN GOLD PAINT AND THE OTHER SIDE IS THE INITIALS "MSD" IN THE SAME GOLD PAINT. ON THE FRONT IS A GREAT POLYCHROME PAINTED HEX SIGN.
The box is constructed with the typical large cut dovetails of the period. The molded bottom board still retains its original wooden pegs.

The top has an old 19th century split with a great early repair. The repair in nearly as old as the box itself. It has rose head and square nails and the best patina. This box was channeled for a long iron lock and that is what probably split the top. The lock was removed when the repair was made. There are also some added 19th century nails to the top blue section where the lid slides for added support.
12 1/4" across, 8 3/4" deepand a full 4 3/4" tall.
