Description

FRESH FROM AN OLD CONNECTICUT COLLECTION. ONE OF THE VERY BEST CHAPIN SCHOOL HEPPLEWHITE SIDECHAIRS WE HAVE HAD IN A FEW YEARS.

I SOLD THIS GREAT CHAIR A FEW MONTHS AGO AND JUST TOOK IT BACK IN TRADE ON A HIGHBOY SO I THOUGHT I WOULD OFFER IT AGAIN THIS EVENING.

A MUSEUM QUALITY LATE 18TH CENTURY HEPPLEWHITE SIDE CHAIR MADE BY THE \"CHAPIN\" SCHOOL OF CABINETMAKERS FROM EAST WINDSOR, CONNECTICUT, CIRCA 1790-1805, IN CHERRY AND STILL RETAINING ITS GRUNGY ORIGINAL OLD SURFACE WITH THE BEST PATINA.

IT HAS THE BEST HAND CARVED BACK WITH A DIMENSIONAL AND DETAILED URN AND SCROLLED AND BEADED TOP CREST.

IT HAS THE THE VERY DISTINCTIVE \"CHAPIN SCHOOL\" THROUGH MORTISING OF THE SEAT RAILS INTO THE BACK POSTS AND IT HAS AN APPLIED BACK SEAT SHOE THAT IS COMPLETELY INTACT.

IT HAS A NICE BEAD MOLDED SIDE RAILS.

THE LEGS ARE SQUARE AND SLIGHTLY TAPERED AND ALSO HAVE A DELICATE BEADED MOLDING. THE ORIGINAL STRETCHERS ARE FULLY INTACT. THE CENTER STRETCHER IS DOVETAILED.

LIKE THE DOCUMENTED CHAPIN SCHOOL CHAIRS FROM THIS PERIOD THEY WERE MADE WITHOUT THE USE OF PEGS, CHAPIN THOUGHT THAT THE PEGS ALTERED THE LOOK OF THE CHAIR. THEY ARE ALL BLIND DOVETAILED AND MORTISED.

IT HAS THE ORIGINAL PINE SEAT FRAME, WHICH HAS BEEN OVER UPHOLSTERED IN ITS PRESENT FABRIC. We did not remove the fabric.

This great chair is in Native Connecticut Cherry. The workmanship and details are consistent with the Chapin School as are every single design detail frond on this rare chair.

THE SURFACE IS ENTIRELY ORIGINAL, IT IS GRUNGY AND IS COMPLETELY UNDISTURBED ALTHOUGH IT IS WORN AND WASHED DOWN FROM 200 YEARS OF USE.

A brief overview of Chapin is below:

Eliphalet Chapin (1741-1807) opened his East Windsor cabinet shop in 1771 and introduced a new style of furniture to the Connecticut River Valley. Chapin set himself apart from his Connecticut contemporaries by incorporating various elements of Philadelphia inspired design and detail into his work. Although born, raised, and apprenticed as a cabinetmaker in Connecticut, Chapin abruptly departed Connecticut to flee a paternity suit in the late 1760s and spent nearly four years working alongside and learning from craftsman in the urban Philadelphia area.

On his return, Eliphalet Chapin integrated components of Philadelphia furniture design into his furniture, including carved decorative shells, elaborate chair splats (backs), claw-and-ball feet, rounded rear (stump) legs (particularly on chairs), and the omission of stretchers between chair legs. Using local resources available to him and adapting to the tastes of Connecticut buyers, Chapin’s furniture departed in some ways from Philadelphia styles. Rather than the rich mahogany wood favored by the craftsmen of Philadelphia, Chapin’s furniture was made from local cherry and pine. Chapin’s use of ornamentation was subdued in comparison to that employed by Philadelphia craftsmen; however, it was still more than most Connecticut furniture-makers were using.

The Chapin style spread throughout the region, partly though Chapin’s many apprentices and journeymen. Modern craft furniture makers continue to find Chapin’s work a source of inspiration.

THIS IS A FANTASTIC EXAMPLE OF A VERY RARE FORM.

This great chair stands a full 38\" tall. The seat height is 17\" at the rail and is 20\" across.

Similar examples can be found in the collection of the Connecticut Historical Society, as well as Historic
Deerfield, and every major Museum with American Furniture.

The condition is very fine. It has full feet and all the stretchers are original. The seat frame appears to be original. It has one very minor old break on the back center splat near the urn. It is now glued and tight and very strong and invisible from the front, (see photos). The corner inside seat blocks are an older 19th century addition.

Typical wear associated with the age of the item. Minor losses.
