18th CENTURY INDO-PORTUGUESE LARGE FIGURE OF THE CHRIST – EXCELLENT QUALITY
Gorgeous and fine 18th century figure of the Christ made in the Portuguese colony of Goa, India, in faux ivory. The artist shows his masterful art of carving in not only the well-proportioned body, but also in carefully depicting anatomic details of the bones, muscles and veins structures of the human body. The extraordinary quality of the carving is also evident in the extremely convincing treatment of such a difficult texture as the textile of the cloth, and its movement and intricacy of carving of both the cloth and the rope. The blood and wounds so openly shown are quite normal in this type of artefacts, and it is in-keeping with the baroque spirit that was determined by the Council of Trent. It is an excellent piece, of large size and museum quality, preserved in a great condition.
