MUSEUM QUALITY PAIR OF 18TH C DECORATED PENNSYLVANIA GERMAN TIN CANDLE SCONCES
Description:
FRESH FROM AN OLD COLLECTION FROM THE HUDSON VALLEY of NEW YORK. A MUSEUM QUALITY PAIR OF LATE 18TH OR EARLY 19TH CENTURY PUNCH DECORATED TINNED IRON CANDLE SCONCES.
THE VERY BEST MATCHED PAIR OFLATE 18TH OR EARLY 19TH CENTURY "PUNCH DECORATED" TINNED IRON CANDLE SCONCES WITH THE BESTPUNCH DECORATED"HEX" DESIGN BACKS. THEY HAVE THE BEST SHAPED AND ROLLED ARMSWITHATTACHED CRIMPEDDRIP PANS WITH ROLLED AND SEAMED CANDLE CUPS. PENNSYLVANIA, 1780-1820 IN GREAT OLD SURFACE AND PATINA.
The design of the back is a "CUT CORNER COFFIN" style. Great ribbed and decorated edges and both retains their ORIGINAL APPLIED HANGING HOOKS. The scrolled support arms are nicely shaped and the crimped candle cups and holders are in perfect condition.
As for condition they are about asnice as you can hope for. Every solder joint except one is original and intact, the hangers are all original and there are no repairs, restorations, or additions. Again, true to 18th Century features, the candle cups are attached to the scrolled arms by tabs and solder, a feature never seen in the later 19th century models.
There has never been an attempt to clean, refinish or resurface these sconces. They are COMPLETELY ORIGINAL.
For a similar example of the punched "HEX" design in tin see, "The Pennsylvania German Collection", exhibit book of the Philadelphia Museum of Art as well as "Sunbonnets and Shoofly Pies, A Pennsylvania Dutch Cultural History", by John Stoudt, page 214, also shown in the lost photo.
These sconcesare13" tall, 7 3/4" wide andwill hang 4" deep.
