This is a fantastic example of a hand carved ornate Mahjong case. Case is original. Wood appears to be cherry stained mahogany, all hand carved.
The handle has two hand carved emperor figurines on each side of it. It has all it's original drawers still with rice paper lining each drawer. Drawer pulls are made of bone.
The tiles are a 70/30 split (70% bone and 30% bamboo held together with a dovetail joint. It has all it's original tiles, plus the eight blank tiles, that appear WHITE instead of brownish off white.
This game does not appear to have been played since it was purchased in 1945 in Japan. If this game had been played the tiles would turn brownish off white from the oils in your skin. These game tiles are WHITE. The game looks like it could have been from the late 1930's or perhaps 1940's even though it was purchased in 1945. The carving on the tiles is very ornate.
This game has all the numerous betting sticks stored in their own drawer of the case which are also WHITE.
This game has the four WHITE dice in it's own hand carved box with sliding lid. It has the four WHITE round tiles, E,W,S,N, in it's own round carved case also with lid.
This particular hand carved case has it's secret mechanism to open the front door. The door is hinged at the bottom. You have to push the bottom inwards and downwards which allows the door to slide into a groove and then the top pops down the releases the WHITE bone pulls from their holder. Then the door slides into the case and stores under the bottom drawer.
There is some very slight damage on the hand carving of the box. Please request more photos to see how slight the damage is. It is very hard to see the damage unless you are looking for it.On Jul-01-13 at 19:03:37 PDT, seller added the following information:
