The customs surrounding Mardi Gras or Carnivale are fascinating and fun, and one of the most recognizable symbols of this celebration are the masks. The practice of masking dates back to the European celebration of Carnival, and some think it has its roots much farther back in the celebration customs of pagan Rome. Mardi Gras masks lend an air of mystery and magic to the revelry.

One of the main advantages of masking for Mardi Gras or Carnivale parades and parties is that one’s identity is concealed. Ordinary societal expectations are suspended, and one can behave in ways he or she normally would not. Appropriately, the masks themselves have a life and a history all their own.

This is a beautiful example of this unique collectible. The mask is studded with colorful bling and pearls, and measures about 8” across x 6” high. It has leather straps and is mounted with metal eyehooks on black. The outer edge is finished with red binding. It is signed on the inside, above the right eye, Joseph McLaughlin.

I researched Joseph McLaughlin, and learned he is a Los Angeles, CA, artist who lived in New Orleans to design and build masks of “extraordinary flamboyancy.” He is a fashion designer turned mask maker, and is very popular with various celebrities. Steven Spielberg collects his masks; Larry Hagman bought a McLaughlin mask and hung it on his wall. Pierce Brosnan owns one, and McLaughlin designed the headpieces and masks for the Jackson’s Victory Tour. I acquired the mask in Southern California.

The mask is sealed in a Plexiglas shadow box case that measures 11 ½” square and 6” deep. The back has picture hanging wire for mounting on the wall and the backing is screwed into the Plexiglas for security. I assume it can be removed from the case.

It is in excellent condition. I do not know the age or history of this beauty.

Combined shipping saves you money! To add additional items to your initial purchase usually adds very little weight to the package; I save on shipping supplies and you save money.

I usually offer calculated shipping for a more accurate rate. The choices are least expensive/slowest, medium cost/priority, and expensive/express. If items fit into flat rate envelopes or boxes, I will offer that option if it's cheaper.  Don't be fooled by the USPS ads about shipping Priority flat rate.  Most of the time, it's cheaper to weigh the item and ship non-flat rate.  I take the time to weigh the item and offer the lowest rate.   

I offer international shipping on most items. Please be aware of the wide range of pricing depending on your country and class of service. Any customs charges, duties or tariffs will be your responsibility.

I recycle shipping supplies when I can but usually have to purchase new shipping materials -- boxes, envelopes, bubble wrap, packing peanuts, tape, etc. On domestic shipments, I always add a Delivery Confirmation Number.  On International shipments, Priority shipping includes a tracking number; First International does not include a tracking number, just the Customs number.

I usually ship within one business day of receiving payment. I offer two to three shipping options so you can determine which level of service suits your needs; if you need to "Get it Fast" or can wait for Media Mail, the choice is yours. I package my items with great care to protect your win.
