Description

The Mark Tinsky / American Smoking Pipe Company Christmas Pipe Collection. 1983 to 2016

This collection is the only complete collection of Mark Tinsky, American Smoking Pipe Company, Christmas pipes. Mark is one of the preeminent Master American pipe carvers. Thsi collection is complete from the first year 1983 through to 2016, the last year I added a pipe to the collection.  I began this collection in 1988 when I found one of the super rare 1983 pipes and set out to complete this collection. It wasn’t completed until 2014 when, as I was preparing for the 2014 CORPS show, I found both the 1984 and 1985 pipe that eluded me for so many years. I had the joy of displaying this collection one time for the show that year where it won best collection in show. Since then the Doc says It’s time to give up smoking and so, with a heavy heart it’s time for the collection to find it’s next home and journey. Mark is still making pipes and the lucky owner will probably be able to see this collection reach 50 years. It’s currently at 34 years and I don’t know of any other Christmas pipe collection that is as complete as this. All of the pipes are of the higher dollar smooth finishes except one year where I only have it in a sand blasted finishes. This will provide the new owner with the chance to hunt down the rare 1997 pipe in a smooth finish as he collects the additional years. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire a collection like this. There will probably not be another chance. I have added detailed desciptions for each pipe for sale including details about each pipe. It was difficult finding a way to load 34 individual photos so you'll have to scroll around to find them all.  These are the actual pipes included in the collection. If you are in the DC area you are welcome to view them pipes.

The first dozen or so years would lay the foundation for this series of pipes. The Christmas pipe began as a collaboration with John B. Hayes, Curt Rollar and Mark Tinsky. The three of them would take turns designing or collaborating in designing each year's Christmas pipe.

About the Pipes:

1983- The Danish Apple

Production for this first year would be six to eight pipes. This was a shape Mark and Curt selected out of a Pipe Dan catalog and added their own personal touch. It is marked with the Reg # 1083/CR, 703 and 12-25-83, This tells us Curt made it in

October of 1983,it was priced  at $70 and it is a Christmas pipe. This one is in the Natural smooth finish.

Production Estimate - 6 to 8 Pipes

Prices $35 to $100

1984 - Paneled Apple

This pipe is a gorgeous apple with six panels and a curved shank. Mark and Curt teamed up to design this pipe. This pipe is marked 0984/CR 8 and 122584. This indicates it was made in September 1984 by Curt and sold for $ 85 when new. The 122584 indicates it is a Christmas pipe, 1986 would be the first year the pipes would have Christmas stamped on them. These first three years would only have the date for December 25th. Production Estimate - 18 Pipes

Prices $35 to $100

1985 - The Tall Bulldog

This is also a great classic shape and one of my favorites. Curt designed and made the pipes this year. This is the last year of the star with no ring logo. This one is finished in the natural smooth finish and has the following Reg number 12/25/85. It also has a 1which prices it as a $100 pipe when new.

Production Estimate - 36 Pipes Prices $35 to $125

1986 - The Pear

This years pipe is a pear with a bent shank and it features the familiar ASP star logo with the briar ring. It was designed by Curt Rollar and John B. Hayes. It's the first year" John B. Hayes Christmas" would be stamped on the pipe followed by the year. This one features the brown stain with the smooth finish and was priced at $65 when new. Production Estimate - 36 Pipes

Prices $35 to $125

1987 - The Cauldron

This pipe was originally a shape Curt designed for John B. Hayes. The shape was used and the shank was changed to a round taper. This is also the first year Mark and Curt teamed up to make the pipes with Mark doing the lathe work for the top and drilling and Curt doing the final shaping. This pipe is a timeless classic and every now and then one pops up for sale. This pipe is in the natural smooth finish, has both Curt and Mark's stamp in the reg number and sold for $100 when new. Production Estimate - 150 Pipes

Prices $75 to $300

1988- The Simple Billiard

This pipe is a classic billiard shape with a paneled diamond shank. Once again a Christmas classic was born, this pipe was Marks's design and is in the natural smooth finish. This pipe was made by Curt and sold for $125 when new.

Production Estimate - 100 Pipes Prices $75 to $300

1989 - The Danish

This year Curt designed the pipe and John modified it. It featured a very danish shape and borrowed the shank from the 1987 pipe. It is a very graceful shape, This one was made by Mark, is finished in the red stain, and sold for

$ 200 when new.

Production Estimate - 100 Pipes Prices $75 to $300

1990- The Cutty

This is my favorite design. Mark designed this pipe and Curt and Mark again collaborated in making them. The engineering on this pipe was remarkable. Every single one of these pipes would balance on the stem. This one is in the natural smooth finish and sold for$ 125.

Production Estimate - 80 to 90 Pipes Prices $75 to $300

1991 -The Paneled Dublin

This pipe is a Dublin with a bent shank and six panels grace the bowl. Curt had designed this pipe as a catalog shape in 1990. It was so nice it was used for this year's Christmas pipe and is still available as a catalog shape. This one was made by Mark it is finished  in the natural smooth finish.

Production Estimate - 90 Pipes Prices $75 to $300

1992 - The Bent Dublin

This pipe is a bent dublin and is the second year where we can see Mark refining the finishing touches on his stems with the small black lucite and briar inlay in the stem. This one was finished with the brown stain and smooth finish.

Production Estimate - 80 - 90 Pipes Prices $75 to $300

1993 - The Perfect Billiard

Mark and John designed this year's Christmas pipe. They took the features of several pipes they liked to come up with the perfect billiard. It has a tall bowl with a slight roundness to it. This one is finished in the natural smooth finish.

Production Estimate - 80 - 90 Pipes Prices $75 to $300

1994 - The Lovat Apple

This year John B. Hayes would design the pipe. It's an Apple with a lovat shank and the shank tapers slightly near the bowl. It is a very comfortable pipe, John really picked a great shape. This pipe is in the natural smooth finish.

Production Estimate - 90 Pipes Prices $75 to $300

1995 - The Poker

Curt had designed a similar pipe to this for Phil, a fellow collector and JBH employee. John suggested this pipe and they refined the shape into this year's Christmas Pipe. It is a poker and sports the tapered stem from the 1987 Christmas pipe. This one

is finished in the natural smooth finish.

Production Estimate - 80 Pipes Prices $75 to $300

1996 - The Bent Apple

This year's pipe is an apple with a curved shank. This would be the first year Mark would sell pipes over the internet. Sadly, it would also be the last year pipes were marked "John B. Hayes Christmas". This one features the natural smooth finish.

Production Estimate - 80 Pipes Prices $75 to $300

The period from 1997 to 2000 was a transition period. New finishes began appearing as Mark worked to further refine his pipes and he would begin selling more of his pipes on the internet. He would design and make all the pipes from this point on. In previous years a red stain would pretty much yield a red pipe like you see in the 1989 previously pictured. Brown stains yielded brown pipes like you see on the 1986. He started refining the stains with a new process that resulted in more of a contrast on the pipes.

In 1998 we would see a new logo grace the stems of his pipes. The briar ring and glass insert would be discontinued. Mark had experimented with a few other logos previously, but they were very labor intensive and just didn't seem to fit the pipes as well. The new logo would be the American star made of metal.

By 2000 we would see six standard finishes, Pristine, Cabernet, Walnut, Black and Tan, Tanshell, Sandblast and Coral.

A new grading system would also debut in 2000. Pipes would be graded on a star system with 5 stars reserved for the rarest high grade pipe.

The first five hundred dollar Christmas pipe was born.

1997- The Canted Billiard

This year's pipe is a canted billiard with a 114 bent shank. This one is displayed in the sandblast finish, it is the only year I don't have a smooth finish.

Production Estimate - 80 Pipes Prices $75 to $300

1998 The Bent Dublin

This year we would see a nice Dublin  shape with a 114 curved, oval, bent shank. This one is displaying the natural smooth finish.

Production Estimate - 80 Pipes Prices $75 to $300

1999- The Bent Bulldog

This pipe is a Bulldog  shape with a 1/8 Bent  diamond shank. It's a smaller pipe than some of the previous years and it's finished in the natural smooth finish.

Production Estimate - 100 Pipes Prices $75 to $300

2000 - The Bent Rhodesian

This year's pipe is a 114 Bent Rhodesian. It is the first year Mark began using a new star rating system and produced new finishes. This group of pipes would yield Mark's first 5 star rated pipe.

This pipe is rated 1 Star with a Cabemet finish. Production Estimate - 150 Pipes

Prices $110 to $410

The year 2001 would be the beginning of a new era for Mark and his Christmas pipes. I think these are the best Christmas pipes he has ever produced. Sometimes in the pipe world folks would lament about early production pipes being the better pipes to collect. That would not be true here

Each year would see further refinements to his techniques. The new finishes just kept getting better and better and the new logo really accented the pipes well. A new Mocha finish was added.

From 2000 to 2007 you can see Mark spent a lot of time focusing on the stems of these pipes. The Cauldron II was a celebration of the 1987 Cauldron featured 20 years earlier. It was also the year we would see prices top $700 for a five star rated pipe. A Coral Carve finished pipe was still $175 so it was nice to see a wide range of finishes available. High grade collectors would have a nice selection of pipes to choose from and us normal folks would also have a nice selection of reasonably priced pipes.

In 2008 he started adding new ferrules and later we would see stem inserts made out of exotic woods, silver and other materials. It was hard to imagine how much these extra touches added to the pipes.

2001- The Graceful Dublin

A classic dublin shape with a diamond shank and very graceful lines. This is really the first year that we would start seeing smaller Christmas pipes show up. It's still a group 5 in size but really doesn't look or feel that big. This pipe is rated 2 Stars and has the Sunrise finish.

2002 - The Cherrywood

This year's pipe is a classic cherrywood. It really shows off the straight grain on the sides of the bowl and the birdseye on the top and bottom. This one is rated 3 Stars and has the Cabemet finish.

Production Estimate - 80 to 90 Pipes Prices $110 to $410

2003 - The Author

This pipe is a nice classic shape with great lines.lt's a little smaller than Mark normally makes but the short stubby shank really flows well into the round bowl. This pipe is rated 2 Stars and has the Sunrise finish.

2004 - The Bent Dublin

This year's pipe is a bent dublin with a custom stem that is long and very flat with a hint of a fishtail. Mark had this stem made in Italy and imported for this pipe.

This pipe is rated 2 Star and features the Sunrise Finish

Production Estimate - 80 to 90 Pipes Prices $125 to $435

2005 - The Curved Billiard

The flat panels on the shank accentuates the curve of the billiard bowl. While the slightly curved shank adds to the gracefulness and balance of this 114 bent pipe. This pipe is rated 1star  and has the Cabemet finish.

Production Estimate - 80 to 90 Pipes Prices $135 to $485

2006 - The Six Panel Apple

Each panel has a different grain pattern The slightly triangular shank is enhanced with an amber lucite stem. It adds to the gracefulness and balance of this 114 bent pipe.

This pipe is rated 4 Stars and features the  Sunrise Finish Production Estimate - 80 to 90 Pipes

Prices $150 to $650

2007 - The Cauldron II

This is a re-make of the classic 1987 Christmas shape. It is also the twentieth anniversary for that pipe and this version is slightly smaller and available in the new finishes Mark has developed. This pipe is rated 1Star with the Pristine finish.

Production Estimate - 80 to 90 Pipes Prices $175 to $700

2008 - The Cumberland Bulldog

This years pipe is a classic bulldog with a diamond shank. It has a short Cumberland ferrule and a military bit. It's the ftrst year Mark started using intricate ferrules and it is a stunning pipe. This pipe is rated 4 Stars and features a Sunset finish.

Production Estimate - 80 to 90 Pipes Prices $155 to $700

2009 - The Military Bit Apple

This is a very intricate pipe, it features a military bit with a Elforin or Cumberland accent ring combined with a wedding band style silver ring. This pipe is rated 3 Stars and has the  Sunset finish.

Production Estimate - 80 to 90 Pipes Prices $165 to $700

2010- The Tomato Author

An Author with a slight tomato accent and flowing lines really set off this pipe. This one is rated 4 stars with the Cabemet finish and a maple birdseye stem insert.

Production Estimate - 80 to 90 Pipes Prices $165 to $700

2011 - The Classic Bulldog

The Bulldog is one of the most difficult shapes to carve and get it right. Mark is famous for knocking this shape out of the park and this year's pipe is a fine example. This pipe  is a 2 star and features the Pristine finish and a Beaucote stem insert.

2012 - The Radical Rhodesian

This years pipe features a Mazur birch stem insert and is very comfortable to hold and smoke. It is one of my

favorites and is the 30th pipe in this series. This one is a 2 star and finished in the Natural finish.

Production Estimate - 80 to 90 Pipes Prices $165 to $700

2013- The Bent Cherrywood

The Bent Cherrywood would be featured this year and is an excellent showcase for grain. The stems have a nice Beaucote insert and this pipe is finished in the new Bengal smooth finish. It is rated four stars.

2014- The Bent Dublin

This is a bent Dublin with a white delrin ferrule and black stem. It is a very rare Gold Star Grade

2015- The Military Billiard

This year's Christmas Pipe is a Military Billiard. It has a  slightly canted forward with a barely discernable  bend.  A great showcase for grain this pipe comes with a Cumblerland Acyrlic  ferrule and is graded 3 Stars

2016- The Curved Shank Squat Rhodesian

A great showcase for grain this pipe comes with a  Black Acyrlic stem and it graded 2 Stars
