This excellent example of Shearwater Pottery comes from the estate of a major Midwestern American art pottery collector. The collection will be sold over the next few weeks. Please see my other sales for more Shearwater pieces from this estate.

Shearwater pottery is a family business founded in 1928 by Peter Anderson, with his parents George Walter Anderson, Sr. and Annette McConnell Anderson. The local Ocean Springs, Mississippi clays were used to make Shearwater wares in the 1930s, and the company continues to make pottery today.

This bust depicting a child’s head by Shearwater has a dark gun metal metallic glaze and is in excellent condition. It stands a little under 8 and ½” tall and is 5” across at the widest point of the base. It is marked “Shear” on the narrow resting edge but I find no “water.” The green felt cushioning pieces may be over it, or they just stamped it partially in this narrow area. The metallic glaze is excellent. The bust is in great condition-- no cracks, chips, repairs or damage of any kind. It’s a sweet piece.
