DESCRIPTION: We are pleased to offer this wonderful Georgian 18K gold and carnelian armorial ring. This is a particularly massive example- by far the largest we have come across. The face of the ring is 28MM x 24MM. A richly hued carved Carnelian intaglio of an interesting coat of Arms. At the top, is an ostrich standing on a crown. To the left and right of the helm emerge scrolling leaves and other representations that surround the central shield. Within this shield is another ostrich standing on a crown, to the other side is a double or patriarchal cross in crown. This motif is very similar to the Hungarian royal crest. This stone is set in it’s original simple thick 18kt gold setting. The piece tests as 18 carat Gold. English circa 1820. The stone has beautiful swirls and gradations. The ring is unmarked but tests as 18k or higher.

The piece is in good condition with expected wear to face of ring. Slight light surface scratches to stone. There is the tiniest loss to stone at roughly 1 o’ clock position. It is not really visible from the face without magnification- it only appears as roughness to the edge, but if you look from behind and hold to the light you can see a tiny piece missing. It is like a grain of sand and a tiny- repaired flaked area next to it. Under magnification we can see the flake has been repaired or glued. It is only to the back edge, the flake is paper thin and does not go through to the face and it does not detract from the ring, probably being caused by someone during the last 200 years trying to remove the stone to take the huge gold setting. Lucky for us, they must have changed their minds as the piece survived intact. We have photographed this under great magnification so you can view.
