Match Pen Vtg 30s Sheaffer Balance Pencil Gold Cartouche Brown Striated Pearl For Sale
Uncommon Deluxe / Jeweler’s Band gold filled ornate
with unused engraver’s box or Cartouche
Matches an early 1930’s Sheaffer Balance Fountain Pen
(I believe the matching Balance fountain pen may also be called “ Feather Touch” or “Feathertouch”)
This one is a bit different. I got some help from an expert collector / seller to identify this pencil. I was told that this was an un-catalogued variant (or that there was little description in the company history describing these “deluxe” versions).
In the 1930’s Sheaffer did make a few Balance Fountain pen sets with matching mechanical pencils that had a much wider gold filled band – called a “Jeweler’s or “Deluxe” band.
This particular pencil has the wide jeweler’s gold filled band with an engraver’s box or cartouche on the back for an initial or monogram. It has never been engraved.
The pattern was called “Brown Striated,” but it just seems too pretty for such a plain title. I have seen other seller’s call it “Golden Pearl.” I, myself, think it looks a bit like a Tiger’s Eye.
Dimensions and Markings:
Great antique Celluloid finish with fabulous coloring. Gold filled clip and band.
Measures 5 ¼ inches in length. Approx. 1 ¼ inches in circumference.
Marking in the celluloid above the gold jeweler’s band: SHEAFFER’S, MADE IN U.S.A., PAT’D IN U.S.A.
Ornate deluxe jeweler’s band: a little under 3/8ths inch long with unengraved cartouche box on the back.
The gold fill is just lovely. I have read that this is often worn. Not this one – it shows little to no wear on the gold. It has the special engraver’s box or cartouche. The brown and gold striped celluloid pattern is vivid. There has been no deterioration to this fabulous design. The only flaw I see: some tiny scratches on the metal writing tip.
I do not know how to refill or work these antique mechanical pencils. I have not taken it apart. The middle band area turns. This one was just so pretty that I did not want to take the chance in damaging it by trying to take it apart.
If you are looking for a matching pencil for a Sheaffer Balance Fountain Pen in this gold brown pearl pattern, this one is just lovely. If you happen to have a special “deluxe” or “jeweler’s” band fountain pen, then this one would really increase the value as a matched set. I believe that the size would match a regular Balance, but it would still look lovely with the oversized pen, too.
