May, 1864 Civil War Pass -- Provost Marshal's Office, Fredericksburg:
$64

This is an original Civil War pass issued by the Provost Marshal's Office, Fredericksburg, on May 26, 1864.It states, "GUARDS, Pass the bearer, Tom {or Jon?} Louchins, Colored, to Washington City, D. C. By order of AUGUSTUS MANNING WRIGHT, Capt. and Provost Marshal."It is signed by "George Mitchell, 1st Lieut. and Ass't Prov. Marshal"The pass measures approximately 7 5/8 inches by 2 1/8 inches and is printed on paper with a fine, light blue horizontal line.Looking at the back it is apparent that the pass was folded several times; it was likely carried in the bearer's pocket or wallet.Across the right end of the last fold is written diagonally, "Approved By order of J. F Stauntlor" {take a look at the pictures...handwriting is hard to decipher}, "Col. 67th P.V. Comd'g, J. F. Young Adjt."This original document is in good condition; but, it is over 149 years old and shows normal signs of discoloration and wear from use. There are small dog-ears that I have not attempted to unfold. There is a faint rectangular mark on the upper right end of the back side, consistent with the pass having been mounted in an album at some point in the past.To me, the blemishes just add to the character of this unique piece of history. They were all present when I acquired the pass over 40 years ago. Please take a close look at the pictures. If you like what you see and would like to add this to your collection, place a offer.I ship via USPS Priority Mail; and, I pay half the cost.
