The material for this book was gathered over a long period of time as a lawyers hobby. For many years, with the obstinacy of a hobby ist, I have haunted people having documents or memories of the Chief Justice. My principal debt is to his granddaughter, Mrs. Rivers Genet, of Tarrytown, New York, who graciously granted me access to thou sands of letters in her possession, none of which had previously been published. I am indebted, too, to Mr. Charles Robinson and Mr. G. F. Edelman of the Tarrytown National Bank and Trust Com pany for making microfilms of Mrs. Genets papers. Other descendants and relatives of the Chief Justice have gener ously furnished me with many intimate family papers and pictures. These include Dr. B. A. G. Fuller, a second cousin Miss Dorothy Fuller, a grandniece Mrs. G. M. Fuller, the widow of a cousin Henry M. Fuller, Esq., a third cousin Miss Cony Moore, a granddaughter Mr. Hugh Campbell Wallace, III, a great-grandson Mr. Melville Weston Fuller Wallace, a great-grandson R. D. Weston, Esq., a second cousin. Descendants of his partners and close friends have given me hundreds of letters from him, as well as manypictures, some of which appear in this book. These persons include Mr. Robert Catherwood J. Spalding Flannery, Esq. Mr. Uri Grannis Tappan Gregory, Esq. Mrs. Edwin Hawley Mrs. Aimee B. Lane, John S. Miller, Jr., Esq. Mrs. Philip Moon Henry C. Morris, Esq. Mr. Perry M. Shepard. viii Acknowledgments I am deeply indebted to President Kenneth C. M. Sills and to Bursar Glenn R. Mclntire of Bowdoin College for access to many Bowdoin College manuscripts. Professor Mark De Wolfe Howe has given me copies of the Chief Justices letters to Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes and Eben Winthrop Freeman, Esq., of Portland, Maine, has furnished me with the letters of the Chief Justice to Judge William L. Putnam. To the Library of Congress I am indebted for copies from the Cleveland, Gresham, Bancroft Davis, Olney, and Taft manuscripts to the National Archives of the United States for the large number of papers relating to Fuller confirmation to the Widener Library at Harvard University for manuscript letters to the Maine State Li brary for manuscript poems to the University of California Library for the Field manuscripts to the University of Louisville Library for the Harlan manuscripts to the Wisconsin Historical Society for the Vilas and Doolittle manuscripts to the University of Chicago Li brary for the Douglas manuscripts to the Illinois Historical Society Library for the Breese and Browning manuscripts to the Chicago Historical Society for the Henry C.
